OVERVIEW OF DISEASES IN THE ELDERLY: geriatric syndromes.

Geriatric syndromes are situations of disease expressed by a set of symptoms. They are, in short, a set of symptoms caused by the combination of a number of diseases that have their expression through pathological symptoms and unframed in common diseases.

Even knowing the importance of these, there is few scientific evidence studies focusing on the prevalence of these, are known as "geriatric giants".

Detection and docketed study is important for any elderly patient, nurses should be aware of the syndromes that the patient may suffer.

These syndromes were defined by Kane in 1989 in his book "Essentials of clinical geriatrics" allowing memotecnica rule known as the rule of the "i".

immobility immobility.
Instability: instability and falls.
Incontinence: Urinary and fecal incontinence.
Intellectual impairment: dementia and acute confusional state.
Infection: infection.
inanition: inanition.
Impairment of vision and hearing: changes in vision and hearing.
Irritable colon: constipation, fecal impaction.
Isolation (depression) / insomnia: depression / insomnia.
iatrogenesis: iatrogenesis.
Immune deficiency: immunodeficiencies.
Impotence: Impotence or sexual dysfunction

It is very important to know the geriatric syndromes as the elderly is a major consumer of health resources.

Pain is a VERY important manifestation linked to different situations, this, if very algid requires great observation, if accompanied by a high temperature will be an important clinical symptom.

It is important that nurses know how to value this pain by “eva scale”

In conclusion, most important formula for valuing these geriatric syndromes will be: a good knowledge of these symptoms and signs + good assessment of pain and what can accompany, in order to reduce health costs and impacts that may occur to the patient.
